Chain Reaction Contraption Contest

The Chris Savinda Memorial Chain Reaction Contraption Contest (CRCC) is a spirited, annual STEM competition for grades 9-12 from the greater southwestern PA region, where students design a machine to complete a task through multiple steps.

The 2025-2026 contest task is Plant a Seed!

Under the guidance of an engineer mentor (optional) and a teacher sponsor, student teams:

  • Submit a preliminary design drawing;
  • Submit a series of progress photos to show the machine's evolution;
  • Build a machine that accomplishes the assigned task; and,
  • Demonstrate their machine and make a verbal presentation to judges.

Who is Chris Savinda?

It is with tremendous respect that the CRCC honors Chris Savinda – a longtime Westinghouse colleague who led this contest for more than two decades before losing his battle with cancer in 2023. The contest was renamed in his honor in 2024.

Chris’ legacy lives on through today’s contest – inspiring students to take on seemingly impossible tasks, use their voice to express their passion, support others in their goals and, most importantly, be kind to others.
