Training

Global support for clean energy and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions has renewed an emphasis on the efficient, base load carbon-free energy that nuclear power plants provide.

With new plants being constructed around the world and legacy plants extending their operating licenses, it is vital to maintain a workforce that is both knowledgeable and proficient with work tasks across disciplines, now and for decades to come.

Nuclearning® Model based on 4 Pillars

Teaching & Learning Model

One key element for the success of any organization is the talent, knowledge and qualifications of workforce personnel. At Westinghouse we develop and implement high-quality training solutions, geared to learning and simulation that address skill gaps through effective knowledge transfer, high performance learning and simulation experiences for rapid personnel development.

The cornerstone of Westinghouse training activities revolves around engagement with our customers, ensuring that training solutions are specifically designed and adapted to their needs.

Our Nuclearning® model, with more than 60 years of global experience in Nuclear Training, is centered on Safety Culture in accordance with the Systematic Approach to Training (SAT) methodology. Based on the needs of the client, we can create customized, flexible and comprehensive solutions within the working environment which allow customers to reduce training costs and times. Westinghouse offers solutions ranging from custom courses to comprehensive, multi-year training programs to ensure a proactive approach to maintaining workforce knowledge and proficiency.

We combine on-site classes with the use of highly technological solutions: virtual reality, 3D models, interactive diagrams, as well as graphic simulators, field simulators and full-scope simulators. Our Simulation Solutions train employees in true-to-life simulated environments, in critical circumstances or tasks, as if they were experiencing those scenarios in the plant’s own control room. Our highly qualified instructors participate in the analysis, design, preparation, delivery and evaluation of the training programs as well as in the development of the tools needed to facilitate the learning process.

Proficiency and Skills Training

Westinghouse is an integral partner in supporting the industry’s goals, supporting knowledge transfer and skills enhancement using the most up-to-date, research-based learning approaches. Our training content is aligned with accreditations for plant operator, engineering, chemistry, maintenance, radiation protection and proficiency.

Offering technical training for Operations, Maintenance, I&C, RP, Chemistry, as well as instructor training, leadership training, and digital learning solutions, Westinghouse can ensure that utilities maintain the knowledge, skills, and abilities of all classifications of employees in alignment with the industry’s high training standards.

In addition to our technical training, we offer training on the skills required for working safely and efficiently. We also provide operations support capabilities for procedures, HFE, emergency management, safety culture evaluations, cause analysis, and field observations.

We are committed to promoting safe, secure and reliable nuclear power worldwide and, to that end, nuclear safety, security, safeguards and environmental protection are at the core of the services and products provided.

Benefits

  • Cost reductions through independent, effective learning mechanisms
  • Engaging new learning styles for enhanced and rapid assimilation of material
  • Performance improvements in staff effectiveness and procedure adherence
  • Addresses increased needs for skilled resources

Leadership and Human Performance Improvement

Error is inherent to the human being. We are expected to fail, and as we know, we learn and improve when faced with challenges.

Analysis of industrial incidents show 80% of causes are related to human performance. If we delve deeper into those analyses, 30% are considered as individual errors while the remaining 70% are due to organizational weaknesses and barrier failures.

At Westinghouse we have been working over the last 20 years with organizations in the nuclear industry to improve worker performance. We work to anticipate failures, activating the conscious way of working to minimize its consequences and ensuring a reliable and safe operation.

Analyzing worker failures allows us to adjust tasks, systems, and processes to make them more operational in the hands of people. Our model defines the bases and factors related to human performance, including the influence of leadership, culture, working conditions and individual factors, proposing the best solutions in each case, both training and non-training solutions, to improve worker performance.

Westinghouse believes Teamwork and Leadership are key factors to success. We trust supervisors as a model, guide, and leader for job safety, so we work to enhance specific leadership skills to make work safer and much more effective.
